How to create a sustainable website

If you're here, you probably don't need convincing about why a sustainable website is important. So, this resource is here to explain how you can create a sustainable website.

In this series of articles, we delve into how your website's design, code, hosting, and the content you add to it can add (often unnecessarily) to its energy consumption – and what you can do to save energy.

🌳 Sustainable coding and hosting tips

🌳 Sustainable content creation tips

Hope you found some useful stuff in the articles, and have been able to put some of it into action. Here're some more things you could do:

1. Choose to work with environmentally responsible suppliers – for example, your web agency 😉

A sustainable supplier not only says they care about the environment. They take action – with their product or service, and their business processes – to be part of a more sustainable future.

For every new website project we launch, we offset our environmental impact. (Based on how long the project takes, and our per-person, per-day carbon footprint.) We also regularly review our own suppliers; sometimes nudging them towards more environmentally responsible practices. Sometimes parting ways.

2. Plant trees!

We plant trees for every new project we launch, so the design and build is carbon negative. But your website continues to use energy every day. (There are cheaper ways to offset emissions, but we like planting trees near clients.) Using www.websitecarbon.com you can find out your website's carbon footprint; and it'll tell you the number of trees you need to plant to offset that amount.

3. Become a Climate Positive Workforce

We offset the carbon footprint (at work and at home) of each Supercool team member. We do this through Ecologi. They not only plant and preserve trees and woodland but also support climate positive projects (such as wind and solar farms) – all over the world.
